Olivia Fleming is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Sociology. Her M.A. qualitative thesis explored how children from low-income backgrounds use food as a resource to (co)construct belonging and inclusion within a metropolitan area summer program. While pursuing her Ph.D. at OSU, she plans to take a closer look at food inequalities, as well as food growing and production norms related to landscape dynamics and resource use. She hopes that simultaneously discussing food relationships and environmental perceptions will be beneficial in moving forward conversations concerning the role that power plays in food systems and local communities and/or foodscapes. She is particularly interested in how tension and inequalities arise from varying priorities and translations of “nature.” Olivia also currently serves as the Sociology Graduate Student Association (SGSA) Secretary.
