Jonathan Coley joined the Department of Sociology at Oklahoma State University in 2018. His research focuses on social movements, especially LGBT movements and civil rights movements in the United States. He is particularly interested in questions related to social movement participation, the relationship between social movements and culture, and the relationship between social movements and religion. His first book, Gay on God’s Campus: Mobilizing for LGBT Equality at Christian Colleges and Universities, was published by The University of North Carolina Press and received the 2018 Distinguished Book Award from the Mid-South Sociological Association. He has also published his research in journals such as Social Currents, Sociological Perspectives, Mobilization, Social Movement Studies, and Research in Social Movements, Conflicts, and Change
