SOCIOLOGY NEWSLETTER | Issue #2 15 l a t i o n s ! M.S. student Jake DeFlitch was awarded the Advanced Study Program’s Graduate Student Fellowship by the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Jake studies environmental sociology, and is interested in the interaction between meteorologists and society. Last fall, he published a Washington Post article about his research in coastal Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina interviewing locals after Hurricane Matthew about their evacuation decisions. Jake is also involved in an NSF‐funded research project, Tornadic Winds: In‐situ and Radar Observations at Low Levels (TWIRL), which collects data within tornadoes. He is co‐founder of SunsetWx, a company that uses an algorithm to predict how colorful a sunset or sunrise will be. Their mobile application is expected to debut this summer.
