Admission

To be considered for admission to either the Master's or doctoral program, the department's Graduate Committee will evaluate all materials submitted to both the Graduate College and the department. Applicants who have been admitted to the graduate program can enroll by phone by calling 800-227-GRAD.

Degree Requirements

  • The M.S. in Sociology requires a minimum of 31 hours of course work, including core courses in theory, research methods, and social statistics. Students must prepare a thesis.
  • Requirements for the Ph.D. in Sociology include core courses in theory, research methods, and social statistics and courses in two specialty areas (Complex Organizations; Deviance & Criminology; Environmental Sociology; Social Inequality; Social Psychology). Students must take preliminary examinations in Theory and Methods/Statistics and two comprehensive examinations in their specialty areas and prepare a doctoral thesis.

Assistantships & Financial Aid

Teaching and Research Assistantships are awarded competitively to students. In addition to an assistantship, a student may receive other kinds of financial aid through in-state and out-of-state tuition waivers, fellowships, and scholarships. Limited fee waivers are available to the majority of full-time graduate students who are eligible.
